The Person I Thought I Knew
Everyone else is fed before he thinks to eat.
21 perfect serves won the team the game.
The books we read were second homes.
Every sport was as familiar as the last.
I know his favourite snack from the gas station down the street.
I know him.
His family prizes knowledge, so school must come easy.
His sister and I share humour. Maybe she got it from him.
Deep, calm eyes must mean he’s philosophical and brave.
He must share the life of the character he inspired me to create.
I think I know him.
Shakespeare is like a second language,
But he doesn’t carry books the way I do.
His family is his world–he wouldn’t really leave.
But maybe the sports and literature are still for them.
I didn’t ask.
What will he do with his life?
Which fragments of him do I know?
Am I a figment of his imagination
The same way he is in mine?
When did invented pieces of him mix with what I knew?
I don’t know.
