the ordinary things

we watch the school bus pass each morning

its windows filled with faces

that do not worry about tomorrow’s lunch.

I wonder what it feels like,

to open a cupboard

and find it full.

to ask for a book,

and get one.

to outgrow a pair of shoes,

but because I’ve worn it too less,

not too much.

we stand outside a toy store,

and wonder of the prettiest things

we could have.

we see children complain of things

that we dream of having.

a room of our own

a bed that does not creak under 3 people

a light that stays on,

even after the sun has set.

at night,

we build our future from these

scraps of hope.

we imagine uniforms without patches,

or uniforms itself.

we imagine the rides to school,

the books to read, and

food to try.

we do not wish for palaces,

nor do we wish for wealth.

we only wish for the ordinary things,

which seems extraordinary from were

we stand.

and every morning,

we take these dreams,

and carry them like the

treasures no poverty can take.
