THE OCEAN
Most days, the Ocean is gentle and calm,
It’s hard to believe it can do great harm.
For most people, it’s incredibly exciting,
Tranquil, enticing, calm and inviting.
Humans love holidays by the sea,
For once, they seem to agree.
Refreshing seawater kisses the land,
Rock pools, pebbles and golden sand.
The sound of the waves soothes and calms,
On tropical islands are coconut palms.
Dugongs in waters shallow and green,
Further out, a whale might be seen.
Sharks, Cod, and Tuna galore,
Turtles and Crabs, closer to shore.
Floating sea otters, in tidal pools,
Deep down, the giant squid rules.
Dolphins porpoise in coastal spray,
Penguins and seals live the polar way.
On coral reefs tropical fish graze,
Mangroves hide those at a vulnerable phase.
A water paradise it appears to be,
Stretching as far as the eye can see.
But the Ocean has another face.
It can also be a dangerous place.
Accompanied by a thunderous applause,
Strong winds, with tides, are the cause.
The sea becomes a raging terror,
The nightmare of many a seafarer!
Earthquakes, beyond Ocean’s control,
Try to create havoc as their goal.
Powerful tsunamis many feet tall,
Damaging land as they smash and fall.
But why do Humans like to destroy,
All the things, that bring Man joy?
Man throws his rubbish into the sea,
With metals, plastics and marine debris,
Killing everything in the Ocean,
Poisoning all, in this toxic potion.
Millions of sea creatures are killed each year,
Drowned, without fishermen shedding a tear,
By illegal fishing nets spread far and wide,
Causing marine genocide.
As Man greedily depletes the sea,
Polluting the fish he eats, with mercury,
And thoughtlessly letting the Ocean spoil,
Coating the sea, and his grandchildren, in oil.
When will Man learn NOT to destroy,
The very Ocean he loves to enjoy?
Will Man ever learn to protect,
And show the Ocean some respect?
