The Names I Keep for You

There are, I have come to understand, certain names a gentleman is known by in polite company, and then there are those which are reserved for rather less public circumstances.

The former are spoken with due decorum.

The latter are whispered.

Three names for the same gentleman, though somehow each seems to belong to a slightly different version of him.

There is something terribly intimate about being permitted such liberties with a name.

Not enough, perhaps, to constitute a scandal.

But enough to make a young lady wonder. This evening, I called one of them.

Quietly, mind you. Almost as though testing whether the privilege had truly been granted to me.

And before I had the opportunity to regret my boldness, you turned. Immediately.

As though you had known the voice before you had even heard the name.

Now, I am not so foolish as to mistake such a thing for a declaration.

One must not make romances out of every kindness, nor turn every glance into a sonnet. Society would have us believe that affection arrives with grand gestures, carefully chosen words, and intentions so obvious that even the most determined gossip could not misinterpret them.

But I have begun to suspect that real fondness is far less theatrical.

Perhaps it is a wink in the morning. Perhaps it is a name answered without hesitation.

Perhaps it is a little glimpse into an otherwise ordinary day—a photograph of soup from your mother’s kitchen, sent for no particular reason except that, somehow, you thought I might like to see it.

Nothing scandalous.

Nothing certain.

And yet, somehow, nothing entirely insignificant either.

I think I prefer this. The quieter sort.

The kind that gathers in little pieces before either person has the courage—or perhaps the foolishness—to give it a name.

For now, let me keep these small privileges.

Let me call you when no one else is near enough to hear.

And if there is something more waiting beneath all these little recognitions, then perhaps time will be kind enough to reveal it.

One knowing glance.

A morning wink.

And a smile I shall pretend, with considerable dignity, not to have thought about for the rest of the day.

After all, a lady must have some secrets.
