the moth and the flame

the moth beats its fragile wings against the trembling flame

caught in a world that is spinning

too fast

too dim

too loud

too much to take

and it sits in the dark with its thoughts like knives

tracing the edge of an old mistake

wondering how much more it can take before it breaks

it flutters

desperate

toward the light

mistaking it for warmth

for safety

for something better than the hollow ache inside its chest

it pushes its emotions down, down

presses the urge into its breath

because they say it’s for the best

but still it fails the test

the night hums with whispers

soft but sharp

telling it to give in

to let the pain speak when its lips cannot

to write its sorrow in lines too red

and the moth keeps trying

over and over

as if it believes it can escape

as if it doesn’t know that some things are meant to be left unsaid

but dawn comes slow

not like a promise

not like hope

just a reminder that time moves whether it wants it to or not

dragging it forward with hands it can’t fight

the moth

wings torn

doesn’t try anymore

just sits in the dim watching the light it once chased

knowing now that some things burn more than the night.
