The Manor of the Mysterious Three

I awake from my bed at the stroke of midnight,

for a gallant golden gleam had caught my sight.

I arise - feet on the bedroom floor,

walking up to the old birch door.

And looking closer, there I see

an inscription that was not there previously:

‘Come inside, come and see

what a strange world it could be.’

It was like walking into a fairytale - but not the type you’d expect;

a dark and ghostly one, the moon a crescent.

Clouds as thick as thistles and the sky a veil of darkness,

accompanied by a towering, ominous house, greeting me from a distance.

And then in a moment unforeseen, emerging behind the lifeless trees;

three figures are what the eye sees.

Closer and closer - the trio are nearing, it seems,

while the last thing I remember is an incantation and the rustling of dead leaves.

BANG! - tied to a chair, I am awakened by the abrupt noise;

and the trio enters, now identified as three young boys.

Same clothes, same build; their faces a blank canvas -

the silence the broken as one boy utters:

“From our world to depart, must you do one thing for us three:

The forest go to and find by the day of third the key.”

And to their challenge, I did agree

for this place was far too sinister for me.

As I venture toward the forest, I look at my watch to see

that yesterday is no more and tomorrow is upon me.

It is yesterday’s tomorrow; yet, the darkness still encases the thickets;

I moved quickly through the perished and indistinct forest.

Wandering aimlessly, searching for a key I’ve never known,

I tread upon something - a twig or a bone?

I recheck my watch bewildered by what is shown,

is it really the third day? Has time’s speed grown?

My being had flatlined, trapped in despair and fright,

until I see a faint luminescence, waiting in plain sight.

The key - I’d found it! And then in front of me

The three boys' faces with a trace of glee.

“You the trio’s challenge conquered has,” they say simultaneously.

As brought you were, now set are you free.

When return you, you recall us might as fantasy.

We’d you like to remind before leave you that not is everything as it seems.”

I awake from my bed at the stroke of midnight,

only the walls of my room in sight.

I arise - feet on the bedroom floor,

walking up to my parents' bedroom door.

I tell them of my adventure, every detail of the story;

but they tell me - “It must’ve been a dream or a nightmare, Shae-Dee.”

Now when I lay in bed with the door in sight, all I see

is the gateway to the place I call ‘The Manor of the Mysterious Three’.
