The Manifest

Her laughter belies
the grief she carries
like a stone in her chest,
like a bruise she cannot stop
pressing.
In times of guilt,
she gives her everything.
her body, her breath,
her careful, counted touch.
With gusto, she believes
in velvet nights,
in the weight of someone
holding her tight,
tautly, closely,
as if they could press
the grief out of her.
For another night,
for one more night,
the pain dilutes
in someone’s arms,
dissolves, if only briefly,
in the warmth of another body,
another heartbeat
against her ear.
She keeps a secret.
She cries a breath.
She takes every
solitary moment
and twists it
into that maddening
shout for love,
a cry no one hears.
Better goodbyes.
She still lies and hides.
She still waits
for someone to see
through the laughter,
through the velvet,
through the careful, counted touch.
