The Man at Manama Souq

He’s got a grey suit, but it’s

old and infused, with

this rough, unmistakeable

smell of stale oud.

‘Yalla, Sister, come over,

I got something you need’

He’s got a tie but

no pin, he wears

trainers, not shoes.

And they flap

from the soles,

overused.

‘I’ve got scarves,

from the Kashmir, what

colour you choose?’

He’s smiling and cheery, says my

‘face is so kind’.

‘Miss, first customer today now,

I’ll make you good deal’

He sells dupes, not

the brands

my kids want to

choose, but he

tells me his best price.

Well, best price for me.

I pay and he folds it,

whilst scanning around.

Next sister approaches.

‘You like, Looey Buiton?’
