About the Work
Shae Moodley's poem captures the essence of an oak tree's life, drawing parallels to human relationships and the changing seasons. The work portrays a profound sense of endurance and vulnerability, enhanced by vivid imagery and a contemplative tone. Through the oak's perspective, Moodley questions the nature of gratitude and the enduring strength required to weather periods of neglect. The poem's poignant message is beautifully conveyed through its rhythmic flow and evocative language.

You see me here; don’t you?
I stand larger than most.
Branching out beyond where I should be
To reach those who need me.
Need? Well, perhaps not.
I am seasonal.
When they need shelter, I will provide
When they are hungry, I will produce
And then they praise me:
They say they need me
They say, “You saved me”
They say they love -
Mast season is over.
Where did they go?
They walk past as if I am some common conifer
Do you not remember?
I’d taken in the tainted air for you to breathe with ease
I’d weathered the storm, absorbed the flood so that you are at peace.
I’d spread my leaves so far and wide to shield you from the sun
I’d made it clear, I will be here in every change of season.
How misguided was I to expect the same in return?
Am I no longer worthy of your admiration
because I am in an inauspicious season?
Am I no longer worthy of your pride
because of flaws I can no longer hide?
I promise, I tried.
Perhaps it is my fault.
I fall for it every time.
But I will stay
Here
Planted firmly
As my roots turn black
And no one is here to save me.

Note: A "mast season" is a cyclical ecological phenomenon where trees synchronously produce a massive overabundance of acorns or nuts.
