The Last Painting

My grandfather was no perfect man.

He was short-tempered,

stubborn,

and, at times, ruthless.

When life refused to bend his way, he argued with it,

blaming anything that stood before him. He truly was not an easy man to know.

We were never close enough

to share the deepest parts of ourselves,

Yet, ever since, he asked if I wanted to paint a flower.

With a smile, his presence alone was enough to make me feel safe.

Perhaps it was because

he had once been an artist,

though I had never seen

a single painting he had made.

Maybe creating was the only place where the weight of the world could not follow him.

But it is that smile

I remember most—

the smile that reminded me

he was never only the man

others believed him to be.

In the end,

We never painted that flower.

His life kept him busy.

So did mine.

But if i only knew

That upon his face—

Would be the last painting where

carefully painted

to soften the marks

time had already carved into him,

hiding the slow decay

beneath the dark suit he wore. Had I known,

our first painting

would have been that flower,

not the one

plastered upon your face. I stood there,

waiting for you

to ask me once more

to paint that flower.
