The Last Good Bye

I didn't even know how, when or why,

But it was somehow the last good bye.

I held on to my favourite toy for as long as I could,

But one day it just fell out of my hand.

I grew older and it was somehow the last goodbye.

Onto the next task,

I rushed through school,

Always thinking once I step out,

Life would be so cool.

And one day I walked out of those gates,

Never to return again.

It was somehow the last goodbye.

College was over before I could blink,

The whirlwind years didn't leave me time to think,

Yet out of college I was soon,

Shooting for the stars and aiming for the moon!

I didn't look back or I would have seen,

My friend and I went our ways,

And failed to keep in touch,

Though we both did mean!

It was the last good bye.

Rosy pictures of adulthood were a lie,

I had money,

But real happiness it failed to buy.

Peace was what I had earlier,

But now all I can do is over those memories cry.

It was the last good bye.

I didn't enjoy each day then,

And I still don't know the lesson I will learn when,

Days are flying by in a flash,

Not a lot remains in my stash,

Yet each day I forget,

It may be the last good bye.

So i remind myself,

To smile a little more,

Watch a bird soar,

To say hi to friends,

To tie up loose ends,

Make time for those dusty books,

Or find hidden memories in some nooks.

I pet my dog a minute longer,

Take it easy and grow a little stronger,

Speak a while to my greying Gran,

Spend a little less time on Instagram,

Sit with my parents and ask them how their day was,

For i never know when this current edition of life may pause.

It will be too late one day to do any of this,

And I would not even know,

For it would have been the last good bye.
