The janitor

The janitor makes furrows on the ground he sweeps,

And with his sweat plants hopes and dreams.

Dreams which do not share the same reflection,

With the man he is today.

Today is only for building a character,

Which will carry him through tomorrow’s battles.

In a world that looks at him upside down,

His smiles are recognised as frowns,

And are therefore not returned.

He keeps his curtains open even at night,

Because he anticipates that the sun will shine into

His space. He anticipates that light will visit him

In a home which very few hope to enter.
