The Island

THE ISLAND

(Once, Now, In the future.)

ONCE....

The island lay in a sea of blue,

Overhead, sea birds flew,

Protecting all,

Whether large or small,

Like a mother with it’s young.

The delicate clear waves tried to stand,

But fell to caress the golden sand,

In front of a forest of scent,

Where trees curtsied and leant,

Towards the tropical sun.

Plants, birds, fish and more,

From the trees to the ocean floor,

A biodiverse silent fight,

A complex, yet peaceful sight,

Living in balance, in paradise.

NOW....

The island is surrounded by an oily slime,

Overhead, skyscrapers climb,

Hiding thugs,

And those taking drugs,

And homeless with their Scotch.

The dirty black waves fail to stand,

But fall and hit the concrete land,

Infront of a city of stone,

Where men constantly moan,

About their pay.

Gambling, luxury bags and phones,

Theft, mugging and excessive loans,

Phobia of the neighbours’ creed,

Selfishness, fear and greed,

War is more frequent than peace.

AND IN THE FUTURE....

Will the island be half its size?

With global sea levels on the rise,

We need to reverse what we've begun,

But we need more action to get it done,

Little things, great results.

Remove the plastic found in the seas,

Replant flowers, trees and save the bees,

Prevent extinction, and instead preserve,

Stop deforestation, and instead conserve,

Climate change must be stopped.

Let's live with nature once again,

Clean rivers, fresh air and neutral rain,

We can dream, and make it true,

We have the knowledge to see it through,

Save nature, and it will save us.
