THE HEART OF WINTER

The pale dawn breaks hesitantly over the distant rise.

Bleak rays of the sun slowly penetrate the smoky mist

Which darkens and hardens the changing skies.

The wind moans and sighs, broken-hearted

Uncompromising and relentless in its search

Like the lost soul of a lover departed.

The leafless trees display ragged, naked frames

And humanity uncoils reluctantly from warm comforting slumber

To peer narrow-eyed through frosty window panes.
