The Girl The World Won’t Notice

I am a lantern straining through the dark,

My fragile glow still reaching for their eyes;

I burn to leave a mark on every heart,

Yet fade before their distant hopes arise.

I smile as though their worlds don’t shut me out,

Their foreign tongues a door I cannot claim;

I laugh on cue to drown my quiet doubt,

While sitting close to those who miss my name.

I study past the ache no sleep can soothe,

Give extra hours for praise that never stays;

I chase my father’s pride I cannot prove,

And tire my heart with worth I can’t appraise.

Yet still I rise, though unseen where I stand;

A lantern shines, with or without a hand
