The Funeral

They tell me someone has died, a friend, perhaps,

Or a relative, and we must go to the service.

I put on my black suit, and I stand in the church,

Surrounded by weeping faces I do not recognize.

I look at the coffin, and I feel a sadness,

But it is a general sadness, like rain on a window,

Not the sharp grief of specific loss.

They ask me to say a few words, and I stand,

And I speak of love, and memory, and the fleetingness of life,

But I do not know if my words are for the dead

Or for myself, who is also dying, but slowly,

In increments so small they cannot be measured.

I sit down, and the service continues,

And I am a man at a funeral for a life I cannot place.
