The friends we keep

Sometimes when you play with a puppy or cat, it might bite.

As long as you are playing, it will be friendly, light.

But cats and dogs are animals and animals are strong.

Even when playing, akin may break and good games may go wrong.

Like people, when playing, they sometimes get carried away.

We wash the dirt out of the bite. The wound heals in a day.

Some animals then develop a taste for the biting.

They find the shocked (and hurt) reaction rather exciting.

You may send them away with a bone or another toy,

But drawing blood becomes what gives them unparalleled joy.

Some friends are like that, especially those in human form.

Backbiting, extreme jokes and plain betrayal are the norm.

When you jump back, shocked, rubbing the spot where you feel the pain,

They might feign surprise and say it will not happen again.

You are friends, you keep playing; all is well till the next bite.

You smile but might start feeling that something is not quite right.

What to do, though, you are friends. Do you not make mistakes too?

Sometimes the mistake of keeping false friends is what kills you.
