THE FLICKER

It was a gloomy day.

The sky was lit, yet vague, a haze of tears falling to the ground.

It seemed the clouds were finally letting go of what they'd held for so long.

Water, it may seem, but deep down, it was everything the little girl had ever aspired to.

And yet, all she felt was the warmth of a streetlight.

A lamp flickered nearby. For a moment, it comforted her...

But soon, it too left her.

All she was left with were the unread words.

Maybe she already knew what they were.

Maybe she already knew how they’d feel

like blazing sunlight just after rain.

But all she wanted… was a flicker of warmth in this fog.

All she feared was the rumble of the approaching bus.

And all she longed for

was the flickering light she once felt,

if only for a moment.
