The fire I kept
I played the game, knowing you would win.
You had won before, and I wanted you to win again-
to feel the loss, to feel the ache,
to know I could lose and still be here.
In a battle where you asked for my consent
with every bullet you fired,
I gave it to you, like a queen who kneels,
abandoning posture for passion.
Not because I was stupid, not because I was weak,
but because my questions burned,
and you turned my curiosity into clarity.
You did not win through strategy or superior intellect,
nor because you manipulated me.
You won because you offered me the chance to lose-
not in arrogance, not in dominance or force,
but with a humble bow, a gentle touch,
and a kindness I will never forget.
You gave me a moment to feel, to learn,
without judgment, without fear.
I loved your smile, your eyes.
Your touch lit a fire in me, forever mine.
You cannot extinguish it,
for though it was kindled for you,
it burns for me and lights my path.
The deal we made was complicated in its simplicity.
You gave me a moment, like the wind-
I cannot hold it, cannot name it,
or show it off like a prize.
I can only feel it for a second before it’s gone.
I was so afraid of intimacy,
so afraid of being hurt, so scared of men.
I had been standing, frozen, before that door,
aching for so long.
You kissed the girl afraid, gently.
You opened the door.
You made it so easy, so safe.
Though it was only a moment, stolen in the shadows,
you won the battle.
In return, I found that fire,
I felt the wind,
and I lived a moment
whose memory is mine to keep.
I will ache for the loss of you,
but I am grateful for the feelings you awoke.
I will always adore you,
but I do not need you.
