The Farewell

A villanelle is a French verse form consisting of five three-line stanzas and a final quatrain, with the first and third lines of the first stanza repeating alternately in the following stanzas.

I take a trip down the memory lane, My footsteps echoing in the empty house, I try to stop the tears, but all in vain.

The furniture’s gone, it all looks so plain, No more pictures, it seems we disappeared, I take a trip down the memory lane.

It’s gone - our past - no memories remain, Not even the movie nights or the dinners, I try to stop the tears, but all in vain.

I blame the tears on the melancholy rain, And with one last look before I leave, I take a trip down the memory lane.

Soon enough, I welcome the pain, Say goodbye to the only home I’d known, I try to stop the tears, but all in vain.

The sadness has left its stain, On my poor heart, I take a trip down the memory lane, I try to stop the tears, but all in vain.
