​When was the last time we met?

The last I leaned against your shoulder,

The last we traced the patterns in the stars?

The last I called you Brother?

Mother’s eyes are perpetually misted;

They’ve lost that specific glow-

The one you loved,

The one we loved.

Father’s tone has shrunken,

Sinking quiet into desert beds.

He refuses to speak;

He refuses to smile.

​He tries, sometimes-only for me-

But we both know that...

Behind the curve of his lips,

Lies a canyon of untold grief.

I remember how you’d spin me around,

Showing me the world from your height,

Your eyes squinting as you laughed-

Smiling with me. Smiling for me.

​You held my hand through the alphabet.

We danced in the silvered moonlight.

You taught me how to walk,

How to navigate the rushing streets.

​You were my armor and my shield,

Against the wrecked traffic tunnels,

And the crudest of worlds-

A choreographed dance of belonging.

​You listened when the world was deaf.

Yet, I remember pushing you away-

Every time you reached out to hug me,

Blind to the regret I’d eventually carry.

I didn't know you would leave.

I didn’t know I’d spend a lifetime lying-

Telling the world I don’t miss you,

When I do. Every single day.

The roof somehow lays empty.

The night still feels cold.

The house is now indifferent,

And the voices are low.

But in heaven’s warm grace,

I hope you’ve found your peace.

As I sit here, anchored to your grave,

I pray you are finally still.
