The Day They Stopped Holding My Hand
Nobody tells you the exact day you become responsible for yourself. There isn’t a ceremony. No applause. No warning. One morning, your clothes are no longer laid out. Your mistakes belong to you. The questions become yours to answer. Somewhere between “Don’t forget your lunch,” And “You should know better,” childhood quietly packs its bags. Growing up isn't learning how to cook, or clean, or cross the road alone. It's realizing that no one is coming to rescue you from the person you're becoming. The world hands you a mirror before it hands you directions.
“Figure it out,” they say, as though independence is something inherited instead of learned. I wish people understood that becoming independent doesn't mean I stopped needing someone, it just means I learn how to need them in silence. Sometimes I still look around before making a decision, waiting for an adult to tell me if I'm doing it right. Then I remember, I am supposed to be that person now. No one tells you how lonely that feels. Or how strange it is to miss a version of yourself who didn't know how heavy tomorrow could be. Everyone celebrates your first step into adult hood. No one mourns the last step out of childhood. Maybe that’s why growing up has always sounded like an achievement but felt like a goodbye.
