The day I let go of the pull up bar
-Tan Jun Quan
I feel every moisture of my sweat beading off my body.
I feel every part of my skin blistering.
I feel every part of my arms aching,
Yet I still stayed.
There is something significant about dead hangs,
You try to hold on to it as long as possible, even when it hurts.
Sometimes the pain isn’t the worst part.
It’s slipping off against your wishes.
People blame the bar for being too slippery,
But I always blame my grip.
So I held on, I held on even when I could feel the sting.
I kept holding on hoping the bar would change its traction.
But it didn’t.
So I spent so long thinking I was the problem, that I wasn’t strong enough.
But I realised the bar wasn’t going to change,
So today is the day I let go, even if I do not want to.
So if there is a day you want me,
I won’t be waiting at the same place,
The same place I spent so long waiting,
Even when the pain was screaming at me.
