The Child Within
By Anindita Das
Everyone has a child deep within
That blurts out every now and then
Though we pretend to be mature,
Those sudden outbursts doesn’t seem to end
Dancing to an old favourite song,
When no one seems to be around
No matter the steps, no matter the rhythm
The madness within is suddenly found
Speaking to an old friend after a long time
Not able to keep the excitement at bay
The pitch gets high, the laughter out of control
Like nothing else in the world need attention to pay
Watching a cartoon show that we once enjoyed
Which looks silly if we watch them now
The old memories flood back, the feeling of déjà vu
Making us relive those days somehow
Eating a piece of candy that we had at school,
The different colours that enticed us to buy
Those sugars were happily devoured
Like there was something in it, that made us high
Visiting the open fairs; riding the merry go rounds
Checking what each stall in there had to sell
Bursting balloons with a rifle; throwing rings to win
Like everything in there had to be utilised well
Every event as such that we enjoy; that we cherish,
Speaks of the inner child that never dies
If anyone denies enjoying those bits of life
For sure they are emptying a box of lies
