The Cartographer

When I was young,

I believed

the world

was asking

to be understood.

So I studied

the patience of rivers,

the grammar

of mountain ranges,

the careful curve

of coastlines

where the sea

seemed unable

to decide

whether to stay

or leave.

I learned

that every forest

had a shape,

every valley

a rhythm,

every horizon

a language

waiting

for someone

to translate.

So I sharpened

my pencil,

spread blank paper

across my desk,

and began

to listen.

The first line

I ever drew

followed a river.

The second

a mountain.

The third...

I cannot remember.

Perhaps

that should have warned me.

For the lines

people admired most

were never the ones

nature had written.

They praised

my precision.

My steady hands.

The confidence

with which I divided

one place

from another.

I told myself

they were only marks.

Only ink.

Only the quiet work

of giving names

to places

that already existed.

Maps became

more beautiful.

The lines

more exact.

Soon,

they appeared

in classrooms,

in courthouses,

inside the pockets

of soldiers

too young

to grow old.

Years passed.

One afternoon,

I traveled

to a country

I had once drawn.

The mountains

were exactly

where I had left them.

The river

still remembered

its way home.

Only my lines

had changed.

They had grown

into fences.

Into checkpoints.

Into walls

topped with wire.

Children

who once chased

the same butterflies

now needed permission

to cross a bridge

their grandparents

had built together.

I stood

where my ruler

had once rested

upon paper.

The trenches

followed

the very path

my pencil

had taken.

I searched

the battlefield

for the line

I had drawn.

I could not find it.

There was only earth,

and smoke,

and names

being lowered

into it.

A soldier

picked up my map.

He traced

one border

with a gloved finger,

then folded it

back into his pocket

as though

it were a reason.

That night,

for the first time,

I understood

that ink

does not remain ink

once enough people

agree

to bleed for it.

They say

history is written

by the victors.

Perhaps.

But wars

are first drafted

by quieter hands.

Hands

that never imagined

a ruler

could become

a blade.

Now,

my maps

remain unfinished.

Where others

would draw borders,

I leave

white space.

Not because

the land

is empty,

but because

I have finally learned

that rivers

have never asked

to become walls,

mountains

have never chosen

sides,

and the earth

has never once

looked down

and seen

the lines

we keep insisting

are there.
