The Cactus

I killed the cactus you gave me.

I used to water it like you told me

Kept it near the sun

But not too close.

You told me to be careful

It'll die if I water it so much

So I watered it less

And less

And less

Till I forgot it existed

Gathering dust on my shelf

Leaves shriveling up and falling

I doubt it remembered what water felt like

A dessert plant so easily wasted away

By my negligence.

I cared for it. I still do.

I love it.

But it merged into my bookshelf

It became a view I hardly see

And it was always there for me

Until it wasn't.
