The Beauty Of The Night
By Manivarna Nair
Under the canopy of a thousand fairy lights,
The street dazzled, hiding its daily struggles and fights,
A light drizzle came along to add to the beauty of the night,
Yet one corner of the street remained untouched by the light,
A woman sat there, huddled up in torn rags to stay warm,
Bearing the strong wind blowing into the night, cradled by her own arm,
Gradually the rain started pouring with its whole might,
She remained huddled up, staring at the swaying light,
The people walked past her, offering a glance at her state,
She sat, looking around in the dark, for a ray of hope in her fate,
After a long time, a small child came running down the street,
Holding an umbrella, she came to a still, to take in the visual treat,
The lights were dancing to the tunes of the wind and the rain,
The girl took in all her eyes could, she smiled till her cheeks were in pain,
Just then she saw the huddled-up woman staring into the street,
The woman stood drenched from her head, down to her feet,
They saw each other, as they stood by the street, in the rain,
One pair of eyes had a look of concern, the other had a look of pain,
The girl hesitated, whether to give up her shelter or no,
But she looked at the woman and decided to let it go,
They both stared at each other, a certain warmth creeping into the cold night,
As the girl passed on to the woman, her ray of light,
The night turned into the most beautiful night ever on the street,
As the child ran away, lifting someone’s spirits with a small treat.
