The Angels My Mom Spoke About
By Mona Mamtani
There are angels and fairies, high up in the sky, who count our deeds and reward us likewise
With these words all my mother’s stories ended
Trying to groom me, to be a nice girl
Whom all would want to befriend.
I often asked her
What do these fairies and angels look like?
How would I recognize them?
Are they clad in a white gown with a golden crown?
A pair of glass shoes and a wand in their hand
Flying in the sky with their wings fluttering by
The answer I always got was
They are always in the sky
But we cannot just always catch a glimpse of them with a naked eye.
Be kind to all and help the needy, that is where their favourites lie.
I grew up hoping to see them one day in real life
Trying to do my deeds as I was taught
And leaving the rest for the time to call.
Days passed into months, months to years
With the tune of time, I lost touch
With the dream of seeing an angel in her full glow
Today, at this time of pandemic, I recall the words of my mother
Be kind to all and help the needy, that is where their favourites lie.
I now see these angels all around
With love, care and concern in their eyes
Trying to bring hope and smiles to all our lives
Forgetting about their own life, they are here for all us
Non-stop they toil, hardships they face
Abuses they hear, all without fear.
The angels are amongst us
Clad in white coats, gloves and masks
Or maybe in brown or blue they go around
Doing their best to protect us, treat us and help us all along
They are doctors, health workers and security personnel
The real heroes of our life
The angels in true sense
