The Alchemy of Anger

Do you know how it feels to be so livid

living life close to the surface

of your overflowing pot?

That every sentence spoken has the chance to blow up

For the kettle to scald you

With spitting collateral spits of white-hot fury,

The water burns your unsuspecting fingers

With a tongue born from serpents, speaking the truths your inner child cowers from.

The blistering welts appear

Can’t take it back now

Doubling down on fire

There is nowhere to run to for comfort when the venom is within

Angry at myself, at the world for the mess we are driving into

Angry that I cannot forgive myself, forgive those who wronged me. Forgive that I wronged others. Around the addictive loop of venom constricts the heart until it explodes.

It is blistering ruby-red anger,

an over-ripe cherry tomato,

seconds away from bursting.

It's the deep blue of pain and remorse, and an aching for something more peaceful. It’s the after sun after the worst sunburn of your life,

The hug after the evening-long screaming match

Aching for something more peaceful

But the thrill of pain is so powerful.

The crimson fades to deep violet.

Shades of shame and remorse

Deep blue guilt

Bruises on my wairua

It's a west coast rip dragging my body and mind out to sea. All I can think about is survival. It's not for the faint-hearted.

But on the days when words flow

I can alchemise the pain

It boils down to an aching wound

A hole in my soul

Looking to fill it with violence

Because that was what that little girl was used to.

The pain fades to shades of budding ferns with time. Yellow adolescent fronds serving

A reminder of what can happen

When you let anger get the best of you
