Summer Showers
By Aditya Faujdar
When the sun beats down on far off seas,
Clouds plot their course on the cool breeze,
Spread like webs stealthily in the sky,
Blot out the sun that gave them life.
The unbeknownst arrival is heralded by thunder,
Mighty consequence of the weather’s blunder,
The clouds darken the indigo like dye,
The sun’s blaze looses in the climate’s strife.
The summer heat quenched abruptly,
As the light drizzle turns subtly,
Into a raging storm that drenches one wholly,
And the tip-tap of rain turns to a drumroll slyly.
The radiating ground now breathes a sigh,
As the temperature cools from a blistering high,
And the wind changes its temperament slowly,
It turns into a gale from a breeze blowing shyly.
The blades of grass and leaves, churning in their chemical factories,
Turn a darker hue as they shut down all their batteries,
Enjoying the water as it washes their body,
Surrendering to the winds as they dance with them playfully.
Slowly but surely the clouds disperse,
And the sun’s onslaught becomes fierce,
As the ground becomes dry where once it was soddy,
The humidity and heat make us remember the rain balefully.
And so the momentary cool is forgotten,
Save its mildly annoying results,
And the puddles like gaping wounds in the ground,
Some faint petrichor all around.
