Strings

What does freedom mean to those without strings?

Does it mean the same for those who have it?

Maybe…

Denial forces us to ignore the strings,

And naivety keeps us oblivious to the puppeteer.

But what exactly are the strings?

Who is the puppeteer?

Capitalism,

Society.

I fear through capitalist expectations and societal norms,

We cannot be happy,

We cannot be who we want,

We cannot live.

Capitalism is kind of like metal chains,

Each one tightly locked and unyielding,

So many are wrapped around you,

You can’t even see yourself in the mirror.

Society is the noise pollution,

It assumes this is the right way of life,

Day in and day out,

Clamorous voices whine incessantly.

The chains rattle,

The voices persist,

A suffocating feeling,

Crushes us,

Smothers us,

Oppresses us,

Stifles us,

Drains us,

Numbs us,

Exhausts us.

Burnout takes over,

All signs of hope,

Disappear,

We begin to question the reason why we’re alive.

Then we realize,

Maybe everything we’re doing,

Is wrong,

Is unnecessary.

Instead of submitting to the restraints,

And responding defensively to arguable voices,

We can fight against it,

And create the life we want to live.

We can peel off each chain,

Ignore the noise,

Cut the strings,

And become the master of our own destiny.

There is a slight issue in all this,

Do you assume it is easy?

No,

It never is.

It’s going to take heart,

Perseverance,

Faith,

And most importantly,

Grit.

Many have tried and failed,

Many have succeeded and won,

It’s up to us to decide what your outcome will be.

Life is hard,

And a rollercoaster,

But,

The only way we get what we want,

Is by fighting for it.
