Stranger

Carina Wessels

I have fallen for you

as our eyes met in passing

on the street we were crossing,

and the smile that framed those windows

has left a yearning, everlasting.

They made me stumble in my step

as I looked back and you turned your head.

Forever gone

as you walked on,

linking me with a frail thread.

Perhaps I’ll catch you in the store.

Perhaps that glance meant nothing more

than a friendly greeting

between strangers meeting.

Oh, stranger that I adore.

There must be a lesson

in this senseless obsession.

A flight of fancy that has lingered

and a heart, with longing rendered,

should be noted with discretion

before it sinks into depression

and is left vacant,

evermore.

Perhaps my blood is able

to withstand this fable.

Perhaps that flame is turning

and that longing and yearning

melts to passion in my chest

for a love I have laid to rest.

And, thus, I thank you, stranger.

Though, I thought I was in danger,

you have unravelled a knot.

A cluster of thoughts

that I dared not approach

and looked on with reproach.

My heart, a catastrophic mess,

that would only dismantle and distress,

has taken flight in this fancy.

I need no stranger to romance me.

Only with myself I need dancing.

Only myself in the mirror with a beautiful dress.
