Sonnet #4 - Surviving the Dark Night of the Soul

From birth to seven, I have no memory,

Until the separation of my parents.

People drift from one another, understandably,

But no one prepares children on how to deal with the distance.

The death of a father though - that’s final.

And thus was I presented with many a hurdle.

I began down the path of the sinful,

Full of sex, drugs, and thoughts of the suicidal.

This period lasted eighteen years,

And even today, I still don’t know how I got out alive.

For through my many nights of paranoid fears,

I exhale today; happy that I found a way to survive.

Therefore, it doesn’t matter the weight of the Dark Night of the Soul.

Feed off the sadness and abandonment, and refuse to fall.
