Sonnet #10 - To My Son

I can already feel myself missing the memories of you,

As I sit, with your mother nuzzled into me.

I watch everything that you do,

From how you build with the blocks to all the scribbles on paper you hold up to show me.

Your existence already makes the hard times to come worth it,

For you are the purest form of joy.

As the world - this very cruel world - hasn’t hurt you yet,

And the beasts are yet to reveal their many, many ploys.

But throughout all of this, I vow to be by your side.

Sometimes behind you,

And sometimes, even out of sight.

Because there isn’t much for you I wouldn’t do.

I say this to you from the heart, my son.

Never shall come a time when we are done.
