Somewhere Between Then and Now

Somewhere Between Then and Now

Then, when I was young, I was carefree and free,

And now that I’m older, I’m still much the same me.

But somewhere between then and now, as I grew,

I gathered some stories and memories too.

Then I had to study and get marks to pass,

Wishing and hoping I’d always clear my class.

Whenever I played a sport, I wanted to make a mark,

And during holidays, we played from morning till dark.

College was fun, but it came with its share,

Of studies and duties and learning to care.

When I joined work, free time became rare,

There was always a deadline and a meeting somewhere.

Then came the year when I finally got married,

Life was full of laughter, and happiness we carried.

But between home and office, I soon came to know,

Responsibilities had entered and started to grow.

Then my son was born, and motherhood came,

My days were no longer ever the same.

There was hardly any time to sleep or to rest,

And the sheen on my face was no longer at its best.

When he started school, life fell into a routine,

Early to bed and early to rise was all that could be seen.

School, homework, exams, every day had a plan,

And I learnt to keep up the pace as best as I can.

But now he is in college, far away from home,

He has his own world, and I let him roam.

I care that he studies and does well in life,

But I sit back and relax, away from the strife.

My hair may be greyer, my steps may be slow,

And there are a few things I know I can no longer do.

But somewhere inside me, I’m still carefree and free,

The girl I used to be is still a part of me.

So somewhere between then and now, here’s what I can see,

I have grown older and wiser, but I’m still just me.

Life changed its chapters, its pace and its view,

But the carefree girl in me is still carefree too.
