Slow Work

Nobody warns you that healing is boring.

No trumpets. Just the same small choices, made

again, on the days you don't feel like it.

I stopped waiting for the wound to vanish.

Now I keep it clean instead.

Now I let the scar be a sentence,

in a story that did not end where it hurt.

Some mornings I forget to be sad.

I count that.

That is the slow work paying me back,

in coins I can finally spend.
