Silence
Silence.
The one thing parents probably wish for after a long day.
A way of showing respect at a funeral,
during a speech, an award ceremony.
Silence.
The teacher is talking.
I ask myself: is silence heavy or light?
Some do it so easily then––
Like the mute, the libraries, the ghost towns?
Silence.
But what about not being spoken to?
Something called the silent treatment.
Then what?
What does silence mean here?
Take away the wings of the bird.
I’m beginning to like it.
You don’t deserve me.
Not even my silence.
Thank you for showing me
how much my words actually meant
for them needing to be silenced.
Take away the wings of the bird.
But remember–
even the penguin, the ostrich, the emu,
still have wings.
