She Asked Me One Day "Why I'm Always Playing Music"

By Kevin Masmela

I replied, if I don’t, Silence will

scrape the inside of my skull

til’ there are fragments of bone

stuck in between the creases

of my favorite record.

Play her a song that makes you feel

like you’re skydiving without falling

the song with the same BPM as my heartbeat,

Play her that Taste You on My Breath song

that What You Do for Love song

that Name on My Tongue song

that How Deep Is Your Love song—

Play her that song that sweeps

the remnants of your skull off the vinyl,

and plays you that new song, the song

where the hook helps you breathe

one where it’s you and the verse

versus the world, the song you make

mantras out of, that melody that moves

the body & speaks to the soul song,

that Sweet Disposition, that Audio Prescription,

that continuous repetition that is so catchy

you find yourself reciting it in your sleep song.

I am always playing music because if I die

I want you to play me that song that brings

me Back to Life, the song I recite in the next life,

that song that hummingbirds hum too, the one

that crickets stop cricketing too, the one where

I meet Silence face to face & finally say “hello.”

You see, I am always playing music because if die

I want you to play me that song...
