setting the scene

we set the table for six

fork on the left knife on the right

phones out of sight

the parents at the head

girl and boy beside them

the brothers play table tennis with their mash potatoes

while the father talks football

the girls gossip with their mother about their neighbours

there's a joke and a laugh

a story about school

a plan made for the next trip outer space

and a debate about the moon

with all this love it's no wonder

there's warmth in the room

we set the table for five

knives left forks right

everyone look alive

it's a touch too quiet

no nonsensical debate

brother and sister giggle about their friends

mother and daughter whisper about their next series binge

with father chiming in

there's a noticeable gap in the noise

a pause held for too long

two heartbeats and a breath

in that space they all drink their drinks

and nothing more is said

we set the table for four

just spoons

the silence fills up the room

the father tries to get the children to talk

and it works for a while

but without the oldest helping it gets harder to smile

just then they were six and now there's four

with every second it gets harder to breathe

so with the dishes done and the kids asleep

we don't set the table anymore
