Return to Earth

By Avery Jorgensen

Well, I guess this is it. I’m off to explore the great unknown. A planet unseen by our kind in almost a century. Who knows if we’ll ever see each other again? This might be the last chance we have to say… anything to each other. …Do you have anything to say?

Look, I know you don’t want me to leave. But this is the right thing to do. It was wrong for us to abandon Earth, and somebody needs to go check on her. Anyways, I’ll probably be fine! They’ve been preparing this mission for years, it’s as safe as it possibly could be. I’ll be back on the ship in no time.

But just in case I’m not, I feel like there are some things we haven’t said to each other, and we might regret it if we don’t say them now. I think we should be honest about our feelings.

Stella, please. Please say something. Your silence isn’t going to change my mind, and we don’t have much time left. I know you’re scared, and so am I. But it’s too late to back out now. I need to do this, whether you want me to or not. Okay, fine. If you won’t say anything, neither will I. But you’d better hope I make it back, ‘cause… Goodbye, Stella.
