Reflection

Original Submission by Aanya Kapoor

Reflection

Pondering at the shore of possibilities,

the glimpse of an alteration

catches my attention,

locking eyes with an unassuming clone,

yet it’s merely a fraction of my being.

Dazed by the parallel variant,

I recover myself; toes gripping the sand

peaking over to affirm my vision,

hoping to rediscover the amended version

of the girl who’s yet to come to terms

with her individuality,

but all I see is a reflection of me.

Bewildered by this predicament,

sickly scrutiny in every step

to unveil this alternate identity,

negligent steps into weeds

coiling around my leg; halting me,

until waves splash over my knees.

A whirlpool of illusion presents itself,

my modification now staring at me,

caught in a trance I reach out

shamelessly hoping for a touch of perfection.

A charlatan relief’s arms proffer,

pulling me into a coerced embrace,

its fingers dance, no, crawl on my skin,

the warmth replaced by a piercing freeze,

devouring my whole being.

Suddenly a seagull’s jarring cry

pierces my ears,

provides a moment of verity,

in pursuit of a fictional alter

I abandoned the soul,

I was born to free.

Liberated from the unknown,

the weed’s debilitated grip can’t help

but release its clutch;

each stride away from the rippling tides,

a reminder of the prison

I trapped myself in.

As I make my return

the waves graze my ankles,

the seagull’s chuckle calls out once more,

pondering at the shore of possibilities

the glimpse of my reflection

catches my attention,

of the woman I found myself to be.
