Rain on a Summer Afternoon

The summer sky was burning blue

when suddenly it broke,

and rain came rushing through the heat

like some forgotten joke.

The windows wore a thousand drops,

the streets began to shine,

and for a little while, the world

forgot to hurry time.

I stood beneath the quiet rain

and watched the sunlight drown-

sometimes the gentlest kind of peace

is when the sky falls down.
