Promises Promises

Promises promises,

They hold the world together,

Some are between (so called) lifelong friends,

And some between entire nations,

Or the ones made across generations.

Some say promises are meant to be broken,

That is a little misleading for sure,

Why make them in the first place?

A promise is not the final word,

Promise is just another statement we both mutually conferred.

The privilege of choosing when to be happy,

It comes at a cost,

You can’t be disheartened when someone is happy,

And you are sad,

For if you were to switch places you would not be glad.

Promises made to your loved ones,

And the ones you made to yourself,

They are what define you,

Breaking them may feel like lying to yourself,

Forgiveness is easy to come by,

But giving your word you shouldn’t deny.
