Pre Grief

By Haliemarie Leitch

You’ll see it in a woman’s eyes once she’s

given up

What was, sparkling with sun and stars

Now, sleepless and stained

Long nights of conversation with only words

that play a show

Where the end seems to take forever

You’ll hear it in a woman’s laugh once she’s

given up

What was, healing and childlike

Now, soft and structured

Drained from the sinking of her heart she

cannot fake a smile

Because her brain has washed into survival

You’ll feel it in a woman’s touch once she’s

given up

What was, gentle kisses and intimate

affection

Now, soft brushes for a split second

Loyal is what she is but it cannot help the

love she holds

Even when she’s given up

She is still

Giving in

To both experience and to see another woman go through this is so uniquely devastating. What excellent poetry; Your words paint a picture.

Beautiful phrasing and choices. Makes me feel like I’m getting to know myself better when I read Haliemarie’s writing.
