Poppies of Hope

Original Submission by Madison Dean

Poppies of Hope

Scarlet embers streaking high,

Into the boundless ebony sky.

Its petals will forever blow,

And surround the crosses-

Every row.

Not only by the crosses high,

Do the poppies reach the sky.

They blow through fields, deep in spring,

As Canadians fought through Ypres,

In May, 1915.

Over grey waves, the poppies soar,

Past the ships, far from shore.

Atlantic victory cost us gold,

In the lives of thousands,

young and old.

Canadian courage stood its ground,

At Vimy Ridge, where victory was found.

Canada fought in honour, once again,

And victorious letters home were sent,

Handwritten with ink and pen.

Crimson poppies, symbols of old,

Inspired artists and writers, bold.

They symbolize the selfless tale

Of soldiers carrying our torch of hope.

Passed to us, we shall not fail.

The torch of hope we carry high,

Its scarlet embers reaching the sky.

We carry their crimson message slow.

Lest we forget the ivory crosses,

Beneath them, the poppies grow.
