Pictures of my mother

by Tumi Mogari

I see me in pictures of my mother, and I don’t know how to feel.

Ive spent so much time distancing myself from her,

making sure that no parts of her reside in me.

But its not possible when all that I am is pieces of her.

I walk past a mirror and mistake my reflect for a glimpse of her through a window.

We all try not to become our parents at some point or another but fail because we are them.

The same bones and blood,

Everything they are, becomes us.

I see myself in pictures of my mother and question the path I am on.

Are my experiences mine?

Are my choices hers?

If we are so alike then how are we different?

I see myself in pictures of my mother and begin to wonder when I will become her.

I see myself in pictures of my mother and begin to wonder when she stopped being me.
