Passenger Seat

They used to be in the

driving seat

these feelings that

drive me to distraction

but lately they’ve been

notched down a gear,

relegated to the passenger seat.

Still there, still commenting

on which road to take

but not dictating

the journey or

the destination.

Left, right, straight ahead,

round the roundabout

over the bridge.

Push through the amber,

Stop at the red.

Seek out the green lights,

the way ahead.

Ignore the chatter and

commentary from the

passenger who

used to take the lead.

That’s my job

now.
