On Sorrow & Strength
By Azaan Izzam
And the arguments have taken the form well known,
That which is now beyond control,
It has hurt her ego and mine…
Past the point where a smile could have levelled the temperature,
Where volume of our voices is beyond the bearable decibels.
Yet I will be gentle in my anger.
I will be steady but tender in my words and slow in my response.
I will compensate the hurting pressure with distancing from it….
I will reason with the sorrow, even if the anguish resonates within me.
Not a drop of this colorless vile blood will fall on the vitrified tiles.
No blaming fingers will run askew in my home.
My bones will absorb it all without complain,
And this momentary fever I welcome,
With passion I didn’t know I possessed.
Passion I only knew in my prime…
And while it will limp my spirit, that is alright.
It will lighten the hate at home, it will strengthen the foundation of my family.
