Of Grief

Of Grief

The being that grew-

inside of me.

That fed on the pain-

the losses of me.

Yet I cared and nourished-

and let it breed;

I’ll speak of grief-though I know

not much of it.

I stored the tears of mine-

so it could drink;

and fed myself to it.

For it was the lone stranger’s arm,

that seemed to sit,

through the cold- and weary times,

and take all sadness from me.

For less did I know-

of the seeds I’d sown,

that they’d be the dagger I’d die of;

less did I know,

it was to tear-eat all of me away,

and not leave even my bones.

Less had I known-

of the dull, thorny fruit of my actions,

and that it was my deathbed

I was weaving.

But now that I know-

it’s my killer that I’ve grown,

I see no way out or around.

As I picture me bleeding inside-

wounded by the dagger-My dagger-

the one I’d hammered,

and sharpened to life.

And yet I think it’d have been better.

to die at its arm’s strength-oblivious

to the killer, who cried at my deathbed.

To die-not knowing even the shadow -

of my mistake.

Perhaps when all is said and done, I’ll still speak of grief,

though I know not much of it;

though now- I know, that I’m the reason,

of the very birth of it.
