Ode to sea shells – By Rajshree Naik

“She sells seashells by the seashore”, a twist of tongue so grand.

My name engraved on one, a cherished gift from Dad’s hand.

A collection of seashells fills my home with delight,

A hobby since childhood, promising and bright.

Stranded on the banks, at the mercy of the waves,

Rescued by beachcombers, their beauty craves.

Once homes to sea creatures, now washed ashore,

Discarded perhaps, to become nature's lore.

Their uniqueness is both amazing and enthralling,

Architectural wonders, gracefully calling.

The ocean's song echoes softly in each delicate curve,

They yearn for the sea, their longing preserved.

A storehouse of memories, tied to the sea's embrace,

Shipwrecks and shattered aircraft, tales of a bygone place.

Sunken cities and relics of ancient worlds now deep,

Weapons, ornaments, and coins, secrets they keep.

Enchanting mermaids and sea horses in coral reefs,

Seagulls diving for sustenance, finding relief.

The mysterious vanishings of sailors, their wails and fears,

Ambivalence pervades the sea, often bringing tears.

A sigh of relief when found upon the shore,

Eager to be displayed, as ornaments once more.

Transformed into seashell flutes and horns, so grand,

Once used as currency in ancient lands.
